Puppies were born the afternoon of July 14. 4 girls and 3 boys, they are all beautiful and wiggly and eating well! Kimber did great and settled in fast to the cleaning and feeding. She is a great mom and so gentle with her babies.
I find the first few moments of a puppy's life really miraculous. They are just tiny, squirmy little things that can't see or hear, but they can immediately find mom just by her smell, and they instinctively know to squirm around enough to find her and latch on and start eating within minutes of being born. It's really incredible that they are able to do that and that mom knows exactly how to take care of them.
For the first few weeks of their life, the puppies will live in a whelping box in the office where we can keep it warmer than the rest of the house and can close the door to keep Mocha out (Mocha is enthralled with the puppies!). The box has a safety rail that keeps Kimber from accidentally laying down and trapping a puppy between herself and the wall. It also has removable wall sections on one side so we can make the sides taller as the puppies get bigger and more mobile.
