For the first week, the puppies' daily agenda is eat, sleep, bath, repeat. Mom keeps them fed and cleaned and keeps their bed clean. They sleep most of the time except for when they are eating - which happens at least every two hours right now. They can't maintain their own body temperature yet, so they snuggle with each other or mom to keep warm - which give us some super cute puppy pile pictures. We also keep their room warmer and have a warming lamp on their bed to help keep them warm enough.
Their little brains are developing very rapidly at this point, but it's all in ways that we can't really see yet. Their eyes and ears are still closed and they still mostly just wriggle around to get where they need to go. They do know how to make noise and Kimber is very tuned in and attentive; she comes running when they start calling for her.
Day 3 starts Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction. Their brains are developing so rapidly at this stage that very small inputs make life-long impacts to their health and development. We also start gentle handling of the puppies from the time they are born so they learn to become just as comfortable with care and handling from people as they are with their mom.
Coming up next week - Puppies will start opening their eyes and ears and start adding their back legs in to their squirming.
