Puppy development, week 5

Published on 18 August 2025 at 14:21

The puppies are growing up so fast!  They get play time outside almost every day now and have learned how to escape their indoor puppy pen (when we open the door).  They are starting to learn how to get in and out of the dog door, and Mom Kimber or Big Sister Mocha sometimes hold the door open for them to help them figure it out.  They are learning how to get up and down very small stairs and they really like to play in the grass with the big dogs.

Socialization this week is about giving puppies positive exposure to new experiences and people.  That's not always easy while we also protect them from germs and things out in the world since they haven't had any vaccines yet.  Fortunately, we have lots of friends and family available to help.  We have visitors of all ages and ethnicities come by to play with the puppies; big burly guys with beards, teenagers in hoodies, children and even toddlers, and sweet grandmas with canes, walkers and wheelchairs.  We ring the doorbell and knock on the door.  We play sounds of rain and thunder, run the vacuum and let them chase the broom, all to get them ready for life with their perfect families.
