Oh No! Kimber went outside last night at abut 11 for one last bathroom break before bed and while she was ut there, she got skunked! I'm not sure if the skunk was in our yard or outside the fence, but she took a full-on spray. I had no idea so opened the door for her to come back in and she brought ALLLLL the smell in with her. Then she proceeded to rub herself on the carpet, couch, blankets, pillows, and everywhere else she could reach while I froze for a minute trying to figure out what to do.
I've smelled skunk in passing or on the side of the road before, but never up close like this - that is a really horrible smell! Kimber and I started a crazy bath adventure trying everything we had on hand while Rob dashed off to WalMart looking for some skunk shampoo. They didn't have skunk shampoo but they did have some spray that got the smell out of the carpets and couch. And he brought home a whole lot of tomato juice. Meanwhile, I found a recipe online for skunk smell removing wash. It took about two hours of baths (she was very patient with me - she really doesn't like baths but she let me keep doing it over and over again) and a lot of spraying smell remover around the house, but we finally got the smell out. The puppies' sense of smell right now is still SO sensitive that we really had to get that off of her for their sakes. Fortunately, she had just fed the puppies prior to going outside so she had a few hours to air out a little more even after the baths before she fed the puppies again.
Lessons learned - 1) always have skunk shampoo already available because no one who is open at 11 at night carries it. 2) Don't let a skunked dog in the house! and 3) if you don't have skunk shampoo, the magic formula is baking soda, a whole bottle of hydrogen peroxide, and a little bit of Dawn dish soap. A couple of rounds of that worked way better than the tomato juice.
Poor girl. She smells good now and is all soft and shiny from all the baths, but her eyes and nose are still a little irritated. That should go away today.
