Puppy development, week 3

Published on 4 August 2025 at 13:57

Puppies are three weeks old now!  They are using their back legs much more and it's adorable to watch them toddle around and try to pounce.  They can see and hear better now and are starting to become more social with us and each other.  They play and wrestle with each other and will make noises when we talk to them.  They are finding their little voices and trying out barking, yelping, growling, and even the cutest little howls you've ever heard.

They are finished with ENS and ESI, and their development has become more about socialization and new experiences now.  We practice stroking their fur with soft little tooth brushes to get them used to being groomed.  They had their first nail trim and those will happen weekly from now on so they get used to it.  We pet and scratch them, pick them up, and hold and carry them often throughout the day and they all get individual sessions each evening where they get to be held and cuddled and pet.  During those times, we will put them on their back  and rub their bellies if they are comfortable, play with their feet and rub their toes, pet faces and ears and even rub their little gums.  They respond now to people and will come running to a hand reached into their box.

Coming next week - the puppies will begin getting teeth and Kimber will begin feeding them less and less often.  They will get their first taste of "solid" food - which is canned puppy mush mixed with goat's milk.  Socialization time will start including more exploring and walking around in different areas, and more playing with Mocha (she's so excited for that part!).  They grow up so fast!
